The body's metabolism
Metabolism is a set of chemical reactions which takes place within the cells of the body. Its function is to convert the food eaten into the energy needed to power the body. This converted fuel is used for thinking, physical activity and growth. These metabolic reactions happen to keep our body cells healthy and functioning. In simple words, metabolism dictates the amount of energy that is burnt by the body to maintain itself.
The importance of body metabolism
When we eat food, enzymes in the digestive system and some contained in your saliva break proteins down into amino acids, fats into fatty acids, and carbohydrates into sugars (e.g. glucose). Sugar, amino acids and fatty acids are used as energy sources by the body. They are absorbed into the blood, which transports them to the cells. After they enter the cells, enzymes act to speed up or regulate the chemical reactions involved with using these compounds. During these processes, the energy from these compounds can be released for use by the body or stored in body tissues, especially the liver, muscles, and body fat.
What happens when you reduce food intake
When your new diet plan involves an extreme reduction of food intake, your body's metabolism is seriously affected by this change. The reduction of the level of food intake is a shock to the system resulting in less energy, hence a slower metabolism. You'll feel more tired, your body stores as much as the limited energy into the body as fat for survival and you'll not be able to sustain such a reduction for long.
When you do resort back to your original eating habits, your metabolism is slower and therefore stores more fat meaning tummy fat. This can also result in ending with more stomach fat than when you started.
